The History of The Comic Shop is very long and actually starts in Western Australia in 1982. The first shop opened in Victoria Park just over the bridge from Perth in 1984. This was the first ever Comic Book store in Western Australia. Then around about a year later we moved into our first shop in Northbridge, just over the railway line from Perth. We were at 252 William Street? Or was it 262? Anyway it was on the next block from the State Library. When that store became too small we moved upstairs two doors down, into a very large premises with a showroom floor, sales desk, 4 computer terminalas, a dedicated back issue storage room with a small SF books department, art, portfolio, collectables, cards, memorabilia and many other dedicated sections including the largest collection of Commando comics for sale I have yet to see anywhere else!
After approximately 11 years we made the change to a mail order store. Less than a year later the internet arrived and we had our very first web site. It was objectively absolute rubbish! Then we started on eBay in 1999 - the year they opened in Australia with a personal invitation to us from eBay's marketing department. We did very well on eBay until around 2004 when some drastic changes took place on eBay and changed the site faster than we could adapt. We moved to various other sites like BarterCard but none was as successful for us as eBay. In 2009 we opened our store in Townsville and it was truly awesome! In 2017 we moved to the Gold Coast and the original plan was to open the new Showroom in late 2019 when.... Covid.
Well, here we are in 2023 and we are still not open! But we are almost ready. We will be 90% online sales with 100% the focus on Back Issues. We will not be stocking new issues at all. Once every box of comics, books and memorabilia are listed for sale on the new site we will then consider purchasing comic collections of any size.
I will add some links to pictures of the old stores and images of the old web sites on this page for you to have a laugh at soon. I will also see if I can dig up any old news articles that talked about the various shops.
